World Scholar's Cup (WSC) is an international academic decathlon which brings together students from over 50 countries around the world to compete in a series of subject based challenges, including debates, creative writing, a multiple choice test and a team quiz. The diverse community of the WSC allows scholars around the world to engage in thoughtful and constructive competition wherein they acquire vast knowledge of differing cultures and beliefs.

The World Scholar’s Cup is credited with giving students an opportunity to gain further insight into the workings of the world, going beyond what they may explore in regular classroom-based learning. Rather than a typical academic competition, it is regarded as a “celebration” of learning aimed at those who take interest in global and societal issues. The diverse curriculum teaches everything from the differing cultures found throughout the modern and ancient world, to the intricate workings of space travel. WSC inspires scholars to immerse themselves in topics which they usually wouldn’t and allows the more timid to open themselves up to new and exciting challenges. The competition encourages students to dig deeper, be curious, and above all, it challenges teams to work together, fostering teamwork skills which will be beneficial to them throughout the course of their lives.

In the past, KGV has achieved stellar results in all aspects of the competition. On a local level, our school has been recognized as one of the highest performing delegations. During this year’s Regional Round, three students individually managed to place within the top ten.  (full list awards listed below). The KGV delegation has also performed exceptionally well at an international level. Results at the Global Round, an international culmination of the hard work and effort put into the competition, were outstanding; every team that took part in the Global Round of the competition in Hanoi qualified for the Tournament of Champions in Yale. This is a testament to the academic proficiency and diligence of KGV students, who managed to do exceptionally well despite facing off against talented schools and students worldwide. In previous years, students from our delegation were selected for the debate showcase: wherein their debate skills are appropriately demonstrated by arguing a side of an intriguing and thought-provoking motion in front of thousands of their fellow scholars. The history of KGV’s participation in this competition has been star-studded, and we have no reason to believe that this year will not be the same.

The World Scholar’s Cup has become an indispensible aspect of our academic lives. It has not only taught us about the world around us but about the importance and joy of learning. It is for this reason that we would like the opportunity to continue our journey with the World Scholar’s Cup to the third and final round of the competition: the Tournament of Champions at Yale University.
